The aircraft departed Bloemfontein for a cargo flight to George at 4:07am local time. The weather upon arrival at George was poor, and the crew executed a missed approach on their first landing attempt. The aircraft crashed into the Outeniqua Mountains while maneuvering for its second landing attempt. Former South African cricket star Hansie Cronje, who was allowed to fly as a passenger on the flight after missing a South African Airways flight earlier in the day, was among the dead.
