The aircraft crashed after colliding
with a TWA Lockheed 1049G Super Connie. The DC-8 crew entered a holding pattern
at more than twice the recommended speed, violated their clearance airspace,
and subsequently collided with the Connie. The TWA plane crashed immediately onto Staten Island (photo #6), while the United aircraft remained airborne for several minutes, and crashed into the streets of Brooklyn, New York as the crew attempted to make an emergency landing at La Guardia Airport.
